TODAY’S GREEN MANTRA: Humans are the only species on the planet that don’t live by zero waste principles, thus, I shall be less human in this regard.
Day 54 / 365
Zero-waste fashion is created when designers create a garment using a pattern which work within the fabric’s width, allowing the item to be created without textile waste. For obvious reasons, this is an
ecological and economical way to produce fashion, but is less likely to be a mode of creation for fast fashion retailers as it requires the slow, meticulous and thoughtful efforts of an industry more mindful.

This intentional form of production eliminates
millions of tons of garbage a year. The fashion industry admits that about 15 –
25% of fabric used in clothing production ends up in landfills because it’s
cheaper (easier) to chuck rubbish than to recycle it.

There are a good many designers engaging in this conscious type of creation, but I’m going to highlight here the Autonomous Collection, an eco + ethical brand
who created the jacket pictured using deadstock fabric
and zero waste patterns, repurposing anything left on the cutting room floor by
working it into the jacket’s tactile details. Below is my ode to the awesomeness that is Autonomous.

Blessed in bohemian beliefs, this unified assembly of
upcycled uniqueness integrates a colourful array of handwoven unwanteds,
harmoniously coalescing tactile textures into one spectacular specimen made up
of fragments. Each fragment is intertwined and restated to summarize a scatter
of small stories, uniting them as one, borderless and limitless, like a
powerful army and a warm embrace all at once. Wasting nothing and wanting for
nothing. A visual summery of self, sublime in its intention and design.
