One of the
most beautiful things about uniting with other writers and bloggers is the
sense of community that is created from shared passions and the opportunity to
unite on projects which help shift the norm towards the greater good.

One such
project, which I’m currently working on with Hannah from Life
+ Style + Justice has been in the works for Hannah for a while and
she’s invited myself, alongside five other ethical bloggers (Danielle, Jacqui, Ashlee, Cassandra,
and Christy) to
join her in bringing to fruition.

Each of us
have designed two items for the upcoming collection of eco + ethical t-shirts,
tote bags and banners which will be produced by empowered women who work under
the umbrella of Safe Refuge.
SR is a resource centre for women and children in crisis based in the
Philippines where pervasive poverty and high unemployment leaves children and
young women particularly vulnerable to
trafficking, malnutrition, and homelessness. In Manila, there are an estimated
100,000 sex-trafficked children alone.

For the past nine years, Safe Refuge has provided quality maternal care and childbirth services,
educational opportunities and scholarships, emergency shelter, and supportive
housing and aftercare for women and children in vulnerable positions due to
trafficking, abuse, and lack of economic opportunity.
A Beautiful Refuge aims to provide these women, who have
difficulty finding good work due to their unique physical and mental needs,
with meaningful employment though this safe and sustainable economic
opportunity.

We’re still trying to raise enough money to bring the project to its full
expression. I’m hoping to raise at least $500 for my part in the project, so any donations big or small are most
welcome and very much appreciated. If you click through to the website you can see how much each
item needed for production will cost, for example: $15 buys a frame for screen
making and $3,000 buys a drying oven. No matter what amount you’re able to give,
you’re making a huge impact on the lives of others.

I wanted to share the two designs I created; the first, a
t-shirt / banner which has an embroidery style design which reads: “Shine So Bright The Plants
Grow Towards You” which
was inspired by all the beautiful souls who I’ve magnetized towards throughout my
life, especially my husfriend Shane, who I’ve nicknamed ‘SunShane’ due his
magnetic ability to create positive and loving exchanges wherever he goes.

The other is inspired by Mildred Lisette Norman, who was an American
non-denominational spiritual teacher, mystic, pacifist, vegetarian activist and peace activist. In 1952,
she became the first woman to walk the entire length of the Appalachian Trail in
one season. She also walked across the
United States at least eight times over 28 years and adopted the
name “Peace Pilgrim”. Her only possessions were
the clothes on her back, including a blue shirt which read
“Peace Pilgrim” no the front. When she began her pilgrimage she
had taken a vow to “remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of
peace” and she continued her pilgrimage until her death in 1981. I’ve
been inspired by her story and her booklets, Peace
Pilgrim: Her Life and Work in Her Own Words, and Steps Toward
Inner Peace and wanted to celebrate her life through this design
and bring new life to her beautiful story.
