While I’m sure the powers that be have better things to do than universally align the arrival of new bedding to me, it sure felt that way when Uniq Home got in touch. In the months previous, my husfriend had exploded yellow acrylic paint across the top of our duvet and a few weeks before that someone (probably me) burned a hole in it too. More than one Airbnb guest complained about our bedding’s ‘artistic expression(s)’ and while we’ve still go the original set ready for a changing out, a significantly less stained and more sustainably made sleepwear was most welcome indeed.
Our new stain free and rather luxurious set of sheets came from Uniq Home which makes soft linen and organic cotton bedding in the UK. Both fabrics are exceptionally soft, hypoallergenic, and extremely breathable – meaning they regulate your temperature just like cotton and linen do when you’re wearing it – keeping you toasty in the winter and cool in the summer.
Each piece is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified and tested against any harmful substances keeping the nasty toxins and chemicals found in conventionally produced products from seeping into your skin. With conventional cotton for every 200-gram piece of fabric, about 150 grams of pesticides are used, which is nearly as much deadly chemical as there is product and adds up to about 360,000,00 kilograms of pesticides per year. Which is a shit ton.

One of the ways our bodies acquire nutrients (apart from eating) is through our skin. 60% of the substances we put on our skin are eventually absorbed into our bloodstream, which is one of many reasons we must be careful what we put on it (clothing, cosmetics, toiletries, bedding, ect …) as cancers, allergies and reproductive issues are some of the the side effects for us (the final consumer) and those producing our products (the farmers and their surrounding communities have huge health issues as a result of the production of conventional cotton, to learn more, watch the documentary True Cost).
Since us humans spend 25 years of our lifetime asleep, it is worth considering where your bedding came from and where you might want to get it from next time it needs to be replaced. By choosing ethically produced bedding made with organic breathable fibers, and dyed with natural dyes / low impact dyes, you’re able to protect yourself, the planet, and her inhabitants while you sweetly (and sustainably) snooze.
