Before I get started on all the good green things I’ve found, I’d like restate what
I mentioned in yesterday’s post (Day 5 / 365 – 5 Simple Water Saving Eco Ideas for A Better Bathroom).
I mentioned in yesterday’s post (Day 5 / 365 – 5 Simple Water Saving Eco Ideas for A Better Bathroom).
Normally, my intention isn’t to influence
you to buy a whole bunch of stuff you don’t need, most of the products I
post about are objects which you can replace your already existing non-eco
items with; For example, a bamboo toothbrushes instead of another plastic one, or, alpaca knitwear made with Love instead of toxically dyed knitwear made with tears … that kind of thing …

But when it comes
to our water usage, there are items we can purchase for the home which will
save that hard earned cash of yours, while conserving the world’s fresh water at the same time.

Some of the things listed below are objects I believe are worth running out and buying toute de suite, others I think should be considered when you’re ready to replace your appliance, while some are there to help you form new habits.
With all that said, here are 8 Simple Water Saving Eco Ideas For A Better Kitchen:
[ONE]
Install Low-Flow Faucet Aerators
Running the tap in the kitchen can waste up to 5 GALLONS of water per minute.,
so installing aerators on your household faucets (and turning the water off
while you’re soaping or scrubbing) is one of the best way to conserve water
in the kitchen parts and can cut your consumption down to 0.5 – 1.5 gallons per minute

A number of studies have stated that the dishwasher uses 35% less
water than hand washing dishes, but that fact is only true when you: a) are using an energy star dishwasher made recently, b) have not rinsed the plate, c) are doing a full load, c) you let the load air dry.

Bye Bye Brita
We’re all guilty
of running the tap while we wait for the water to get cold. Unfortunately, this
wastes 2
– 25 litres of water per minute. So instead, get yourself a reusable
glass bottle to keep your tap water in the fridge, or, if you need your water
filtered, an eco friendly Soma. The Soma is completely
sustainable and philanthropic company that replaces the chemical filled Brita
bits with filters made from coconut shell carbon paired with plant-based casing
and a BPA free plastic pitcher. They’re much more aesthetically pleasing than a
Brita too so big bonus for your eyes too.

Buy A Bucket
If you’ve only
got a single sink, or even one of those fancy double ones, buy a bucket. You
can use it to collect water while you’re rinsing fruit and vegetables and use
that excess water, to water house/garden plants. Furthermore, when you’re washing
dishes by hand, don’t let the water run, fill the basin with rinse water and
after you’ve soaped the dishes, dip them in the basin to rinse off.

Install a Rainwater Harvesting System
This is a bit of a bigger
investment and you have to check the rules for the area in which you live, but
it is fairly inexpensive and the rain water collected can be use to water your
plants, or for an upgrade you can use the rain water to wash your clothes, flush
your toilet, and – if
properly treated – use it for drinking water and other household stuff.

Garb the Garburator
In-sink Garburators
require lots of water to operate properly and add junk to your septic tank,
which can lead to maintenance problems. Start a compost pile as an alternative
method of disposing of food waste.

Get An Eco Washing Machine
I’ll included
washing machines in the kitchen parts because here in Europe that’s where they
live. It’ll save you on your energy bill and your water bill plus it’s way
better for the planet. If you’ve not got a spare 1,000 kicking around, make
sure you wash with full loads and wash cold.

Greywater Re-route
Have a plumber re-route your greywater to the outdoors so you can use it for trees and plants! Rather than it going to waste. Check with your city for codes on rain water use before you make the move.
